the beginning of the end of summer

At the grocery store the other day, I saw Halloween candy. Yes, you read that right. HALLOWEEN CANDY.

I was horrified. IT IS STILL SUMMER. It’s one thing to see back-to-school supplies in Target in August, because most schools start at the end of August. It’s quite another thing to be bombarded with the oranges and blacks of shiny plastic bags of Halloween candy – something that isn’t going to happen until THE END OF OCTOBER! Come on people! This is crazy.

That said, the one good thing about this amped up rush to the ‘next’ season is….

Pumpkin Spice Lattes anyone? I look forward to these drinks (and the red cup Christmas drinks) at Starbucks all year round. If autumn is going to be injected into summer, at least it should arrive with a tasty beverage.

All joking aside, this is kind of a problem, isn’t it? Humans, by nature, in this day & age, are already busy creatures. We have constant contact with one another, we have 24/7 access to information, and a lot of us are always on the go. It’s fair to assume that we already are guilty of rushing through the present moment to move onto the next, always looking ahead to the next thing. To perpetuate the problem, we get Halloween candy in the summer. We get Christmas decorations and music in the fall. We get ideas for spring fashion in the winter. And we barely have time to notice the snow melting and weather getting warmer before we’re accosted with bikinis and sunscreen. Can we all just take a second and recognize the season we’re in? Anyone with me?

I’ll climb down off of that soap box now and transition into a more pleasant topic: shopping.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll notice I’ve been shopping a lot recently. Or at least trying things on in dressing rooms. My latest venture has been a quest for back-to-work clothes. The above rant aside, at some point, it does feel a little silly to be purchasing tank tops and shorts when September is right around the corner. Now, I’m not wearing my fall clothes yet, which is a different story.

I saw this hedgehog shirt at Target (actually, is that a hedgehog or a porcupine?) Is this not the cutest thing we’ve ever seen? Now, you’ll think I’m crazy because I actually didn’t purchase it, but I’m contemplating going back for it. It is definitely appropriate for a casual Friday with jeans, and maybe a blazer, but there’s a part of me that thinks I should stop buying clothes with animals on them. I may or may not have purchased upwards of 5 cat shirts this summer….

Of these (from TJ Maxx), I ended up purchasing the top on the left, and both pairs of jeans pictured. The lighter ones are just comfy and would make for a great weekend pair of jeans. The dark jeans in the center and right are by Jessica Simpson. I have always been a fan of Jessica Simpson, ever since the days of Newlyweds. I love that she has a clothing and accessories line now, and most of her stuff is super cute.

I did have some money left over on a Forever-21 gift card recently, and as every girl knows, the best part of that store to blow cash? The jewelry/accessories section.

I’ve always loved these earring cuffs and finally decided to try one. It took me a while to figure out what part of my ear it would fit most snuggly, and I worried that it would pinch, but it doesn’t feel uncomfortable at all. I like that it only has the chain on one side; I’ve seen some that have matching cuffs and chains, but that always looks a little excessive.

As a parting shot, I’m excited to say that my friend Elle, who I wrote about the other day, just started her own blog! Everyone, please go check out Modern Mediterranean and show her some love!

  1. I understand that stores push the next season just to make more money, but seriously?… Slow the heck down! I mean, I’m all about fall, but I’d like to enjoy the rest of my summer without having to think about colder, shorter days And that hedgehog (I think) shirt is totally the cutest thing ever.

  2. Omg, Halloween candy already?! Stop it! I still have over a month left of summer vacation. Leave me alonneeeeee. Although, I am looking forward to sweatshirt weather. There’s nothing better than slipping on a big cozy hoodie on a cold, bleary day.

Love the TJ Maxx stuff you ended up getting. That shirt is so cute!

  3. As an employee of retail, I still get annoyed when buyers/leadership decide to push seasons earlier and earlier. Honestly, sales do not happen (I know the numbers!) until you get close to the event so I have no idea why they waste the space like that. #rantover
